KNITTING ARCHITECTURE 002
2021
Knitted Architecture by Leanne Zilka & Jenny Underwood | Sampling The Future, Ian Potter Gallery NGV, 2021
In preparation for the National Gallery of Victoria’s 2021 exhibition ‘Sampling The Future’ a team of research assistants were tasked with producing a 1:1 scale prototype of a series of sculptural knitted forms, designed by Leanne Zilka and Jenny Underwood. The team were asked to design, produce and assemble a structural system to support the knitted form, in order for its display at the NGV’s Ian Potter Gallery.
Various structural methods were considered, including suspending the forms from the ceiling or structural scaffolding. The final prototype was produced by attaching series of moulded timber ‘ribs’ to a disk and arm type assembly, encased in the knit and supported by a length of steel hollow section. Fabrication was undertaken by the team with the support and supervision of Jenny Underwood, Leanne Zilka and RMIT’s workshop staff.
